British Values at IVIA

Promoting Fundamental British Values

At Iver Village Infant Academy (IVIA), we are committed to serving our community and preparing our children for life in modern Britain. In accordance with the Department for Education, we ensure that the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance are woven into the fabric of our school life.

We celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our pupils and families, using our core school values—Ready, Respectful, Safe, Caring, Learning, and Growing—to bring these national expectations to life for our youngest learners.

Democracy: Making Our Voices Heard

Democracy is a lived experience at IVIA. We teach our children that their opinions matter and that they have a right to be heard.

Pupil Voice: Children take an active role in school improvement through groups such as our Attendance Ambassadors, Eco Warriors, House Captains, Kindness Buddies, and School Council.

Active Listening: We model respectful listening, ensuring children understand how to engage in fair discussion and respect the views of others.

The Rule of Law: Understanding Right from Wrong

From their first day with us, pupils learn that rules are there to keep us safe and happy.

Clear Boundaries: Our School, Playground, and Safety rules are reinforced daily. By helping to create their own "Class Rules," children understand that laws are a shared responsibility.

Real-World Connections: We explore the reasons behind laws and the consequences of our actions. This is supported by visits from the Police and Fire Service, helping children value the roles of those who protect us.

Individual Liberty: Freedom to Choose

We provide a safe, supportive environment where children are empowered to make informed choices.

Personal Agency: Whether choosing a learning challenge or a playtime activity, pupils are encouraged to exercise their rights and personal freedoms.

Safety & Guidance: Through PSHE and eSafety lessons, we provide the boundaries and knowledge children need to make these choices safely and confidently.

Mutual Respect: Valuing Each Other

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Respect is at the heart of the IVIA community. It is the "glue" that holds our school together.

The IVIA Way: Our pupils understand that respect is a universal expectation—to be shown to everyone, regardless of background or difference.

Inclusive Culture: We celebrate our differences and teach children to value "everything, big or small," fostering a culture of kindness.

We prepare our children to be global citizens by fostering a deep understanding of the diverse world around them.

A Rich Curriculum: Through Religious Education (RE), PSHE, and our daily Assemblies, we explore different faiths, cultures, and beliefs.

Celebrating Diversity: By learning about the traditions and stories of others, our pupils gain the empathy and understanding required to thrive in a multicultural society.

The Impact of Our Values

At Iver Village Infant Academy, the promotion of British Values results in a happy, harmonious and inclusive learning environment. The impact of this work is seen daily through:

Confident Communicators: Our children are empowered to express their views clearly and listen to others with empathy, laying the foundations for active citizenship.

Responsible Citizens: By understanding the "Rule of Law" and our school rules, pupils demonstrate excellent behaviour and a strong sense of right and wrong.

Inclusive Thinkers: Our pupils show a genuine curiosity and respect for different faiths and cultures, ensuring that every child and family feels a deep sense of belonging.

Independent Learners: Through "Individual Liberty," our children develop the self-esteem and resilience needed to make positive choices in their learning and their friendships.

By weaving these values into our daily 'Ready, Respectful, Safe' approach, we ensure our pupils leave IVIA as kind, principled, and well-rounded individuals ready for the next stage of their education.
