Bringing books to life - Oliver!

Bringing lessons to life and getting children excited about learning is a big part of what we do at Iver Village Infant Academy.
So what better way to bring the classic story Oliver Twist to life than trying a delicious meal of gruel?
Our Year 2 classes have been learning about the story of the orphan Oliver who, after being raised in a workhouse, escapes to London where he meets a gang of pickpockets and gets into all kinds of adventures.
Learning about Oliver’s story is a great follow on from studying the Great Fire of London and forms a key part of our reading and writing curriculum helping children learn about the history of the UK. Trying some gruel helps our children to understand what life was really like for children in the 1800s.
Don’t worry though gruel will be staying off the lunchtime menu!
